Greening Your School
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 60 million Americans — one-fifth of the population — spend their days inside school buildings as students, faculty, staff and administration.

We all have fond memories of school – classmates, favorite activities. School makes a life-long impression on each of us, because it is the time in our lives when we can enjoy freedom and growth.

Yet during this stage, students are also most susceptible to toxins that exist in their schools, as a result of many commonly-used products, from cleaning agents to pesticides. Fortunately,   there are green alternatives available, such as our own line of institutional Greeening the Cleaning® products, in use in numerous school districts and successfully tested for New York City schools. Our program is also leading the way on standards for health and safety. (See how our stringent product standards stack up.)

100% of all profits from our institutional products go to the Center for supporting education and research to identify, control and ultimately prevent exposures to environmental factors that may cause adult, and especially pediatric cancer, as well as other health problems with our children.

5 STEPS TO GREEN CLEAN YOUR SCHOOL

  1. Ask your school principal/administrator what cleaning supplies they use

·         You have the right to know what products are used to clean your child’s school

·         Ask to see a full list of ingredients

  1. Ask if the products carry a certified green cleaning logo, such as EcoLogo.

  2. Ask your school to adopt a green cleaning policy -- Clean doesn’t have an odor – so smells like ammonia, bleach, fragrances and other cleaning chemicals do not indicate a safe, hygienic environment, and may actually be harmful.  Make sure your school doesn’t use air fresheners that contain synthetic chemicals that can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma.

  3. Get parents involved to advocate for a clean and safe environment for kids to learn.

  4. Ask your school to test/trial green cleaners.
